Recommendations of A Magical Swamp Thing Christmas

  • Aly Kantor: Hemoglobin and Chlorophyll: A Magical Swamp Thing Christmas

    I laughed so I wouldn't start weeping.

This timely monologue is pitch-perfect satire that I wouldn't be surprised to overhear on the news. I think my favorite part was the "quote" from the piece's unnamed president (wonder who it is!), which I attempted to read aloud in a press-conference monotone. I couldn't do it without laughing, which is one of the biggest compliments I can offer! The character voice is specific and flawless and the logic is painful and prescient! What a gut-twister!

  • Lisa Dellagiarino Feriend: Hemoglobin and Chlorophyll: A Magical Swamp Thing Christmas

This monologue is a perfect holiday satire for our times! I have so many favorite lines that I don't even know what to single out here. This is so darkly comedic and such a spot-on skewering of the current state of US politics. I love every word! What a fun change of pace this would be in an evening of holiday plays.

  • James Binz: Hemoglobin and Chlorophyll: A Magical Swamp Thing Christmas

The absurdity and paranoia in the current political scene is well captured here. Jennifer O'Grady has an ear for this character's speech patterns and the premise is sturdy enough for our times. There is, of course, that strong smell of satire throughout and we can see and sense the menace of a new world.

  • Matthew Weaver: Hemoglobin and Chlorophyll: A Magical Swamp Thing Christmas

O'Grady took arguably the hardest title to receive in a Secret Santa playwriting title swap (it's certainly one of the most intimidating!!!) and uses it to breathe hot-lava dragon fire. Satire? She scorches the earth, and it's cathartic for an audience desperately seeking oasis and validation that they're not alone.
Actually, this title and this playwright were destined to find one another across universes. Hat tip to the forces that brought them together to let O'Grady shine as she always does.

  • Daniel Prillaman: Hemoglobin and Chlorophyll: A Magical Swamp Thing Christmas

I laughed until I cried and then I laughed once again. This…might as well happen. This could totally happen any day now. O’Grady captures the nuance and absurdity and terror of the current climate with piercing sharp satire. I suppose I should be thankful I look just as good in green as in red. Terrific monologue.

  • Morey Norkin: Hemoglobin and Chlorophyll: A Magical Swamp Thing Christmas

Replacing Santa for the good of the “moderate-to-low-intelligence” American public might sound outlandish, but have you been listening to some of the things coming from nominees for the incoming administration? Jennifer O’Grady’s satire is spot on. Lots of laughs to be sure, but then there’s that strange hint of they wouldn’t… would they? Well done!

  • Kieran Khanna: Hemoglobin and Chlorophyll: A Magical Swamp Thing Christmas

This is a wonderful and funny play. Replacing Santa Clause with a figure named Swamp Thing is truly hilarious, but also gives a glimpse of what these next four years could be. Even though things may seem scary now, we can still have fun and enjoy some great work like this one! Wonderful Work Jennifer!

  • Sam Heyman: Hemoglobin and Chlorophyll: A Magical Swamp Thing Christmas

In our post-truth world, there is but only one saving grace: SWAMP THING. Jennifer O'Grady skewers and perhaps predicts where our nation is headed with this hilarious monologue, even fitting in gender specific chauvinism based on the actor portraying its central character. There's a lot to be anxious about as we head into a new presidency, but at least we can still laugh about some things. Excellent work!

  • John Busser: Hemoglobin and Chlorophyll: A Magical Swamp Thing Christmas

11.29.24 - Our government can't even provide the REAL Swamp Thing as a figurehead! Doesn't THAT just seem so appropriate. Discount Swampy becoming our new national holiday mascot is so perfect in this screwy society. Jennifer O'Grady perfectly satirizes the "baffle 'em with bullshit" attitude so many authority figures seem to have to day regarding their constituency. This is funny, scary and ripe for staging.

  • Christopher Soucy: Hemoglobin and Chlorophyll: A Magical Swamp Thing Christmas

Nightmares are more frightening the closer they are to home. And this nightmare, constructed brilliantly by Jennifer O’Grady, is right next door. The political satire aside, this piece is an in depth examination of power run amuck. The humor is spot on, but so is the anxiety.
