  • Steven G. Martin: Roots Deep, Trunk Wide (Bascom & Isaac #2)

"Roots Deep, Trunk Wide" is another beautiful example of the depths of character Scott Sickles plumbs in his plays. I dare anyone not to feel for and love Bascom and Isaac.

Sickles finds intimacy in conversation that is anything but typical. Which makes for the physical intimacy even more hot when it gets to that point. The structure of this makes you think that all those plot structures and dramaturgy, most narratives is really narrow, focused on neurotypical thought process. Someone like Sickles really opens your eyes to neurodivergency and language and how that makes theatre a great way to spotlight it. And he does that in a way that's so silly, sexy and honest.

"Everything, Everywhere All At Once" is not a movie title; it's Isaac's thought process, and we the audience are the lucky witnesses to his deliberations before sex with Bascom. These two are a delightful couple and I want to see more of them on stage, Lee Grant references and all.

This is adorable!! This short about two guys who are so worried and in-their-heads stressing that the other won't like them is a lovely short play about compatibility, ADHD, guilt, erotica, and impressive vocabulary. I adore it! Scott Sickles always writes the best dialogue. I'm so glad this is part of a series, so I can spend more time with these characters!

These are fully-realized, captivating characters! I loved eavesdropping in on their conversation. An intimate, engaging, and humorous bit of theater!

There’s no doubt that Isaac and Bascom belong together. They understand each other perfectly. In ways that others likely don’t. Whether it’s Isaac’s Asian-influenced compulsion to excel at everything or Bascom’s willingness to go along to get along in bed, or their shared ADHD, they communicate about everything. It can be hard to follow, comically so, but eventually they reach the point of understanding. And affection. Another winning story for these two.

  • Paul Braverman: Roots Deep, Trunk Wide (Bascom & Isaac #2)

This lovely play shows us two birds of a feather falling in love as they firehose each other with every single thought that pops into either of their heads. Charming, funny and relatable, it's fascinating watching Isaac and Bascom navigate the perils of building a relationship as lust slowly turns to love.

These two are so great together. And in this moment, I am so grateful they were brave enough to share every intense thought in their head because this moment solidifies their future happiness together. And, on a personal note, I recognize a lot of those intense thoughts from my own wacky brain! This is a beautiful moment of real romance. I love these two!
