JOHN BUSSER never fails to write wonderful plays. In “Erstwhile”, John Busser suggests you might not like his play if you didn’t participate in Playwrights Thriving. Well, I didn’t participate, but oh my, I had almost nonstop laughing out loud from beginning to end of his play. I loved “Erstwhile”! By the way, you can do this on zoom.

Inside jokes are, of course, the best jokes. And I'm so happy... I think? To be a part of this? Though I let the playwright know that I should be angrier, louder, and have access to a time machine. Oh no! Now I'm banned. Oh well, laughing as my screen goes dark, at least.

While recommending this play to anyone not already part of it might seem like a disservice (to those who are involved in it), I can genuinely say (as someone not involved in it) that I thoroughly enjoyed it and found it highly entertaining with regards to both language, pace, and... ambition?

I feel seen… not in a good way. More like through a sniper scope. This hilarious dissection of what goes on in private zoom meetings truly exemplifies “playwright’s delight.” Kudos to John for squeezing so much blood from this rock!

I feel seen. And subsequently banned. This is what theatre is supposed to do. Shine a mirror on reality. This is a funhouse mirror, of course. So, the audience can decide what is accurate and what is distorted in the depiction of these playwrights. I say it's more accurate than you'd expect. "I'm with the banned."

Despite the disclaimer, this play is not a play. It is an actual transcript of a Playwrights Thriving meeting. No names have been changed to protect the identities, and when it is actually read in the Playwrights Thriving Playwrights Delight Reading, the play will be read by the people who the writer included. Meta that with a stick. END OF PLAY.
