Artistic Statement
I have been writing and developing, workshopping, and producing plays for the past decade, through my MFA, fellowships, commissions, and as a playwright in residence. My Southern roots have imprinted on me a love of the grotesque, the supernatural, the struggle on the tipping point of transformation or decay. It has also endowed me with a need for the right now, connection and understanding in This Moment, before it's too late. I interrogate the family structure as a laboratory to experiment with space, meaning, and absence, spaces populated by broken people, good and strange and sometimes doomed, determined to make themselves whole, operating under their own premise.
Characters in these plays are in battle to both clearly express who they are and what they think, and to fully become who they will be. They are often exquisitely extra, messy, or aggressively neat, exploding out in a parade of mumbles, shouts and silence. I write to reckon with the ghosts already in the room.
