Artistic Statement
I write plays from the heart. I write from the most tender, achey places I can access within myself. I write and re-write in pursuit of motion: to create resonant shifts from word to word, sentence to sentence, and reality to reality. I believe in the medicinal properties of catharsis. I believe in moments where heightened language is completely natural. I believe in unexpected spectacle. I believe in small, barely-articulated truths. I believe in bedtime tales, and campfire yarns, and that stories count for more when we’re together for them.
I write plays that are often "playable" – meaning that they integrate video games, virtual reality, and/or immersive theater deeply and dynamically within their storytelling. These plays invite my audiences to be generative collaborators in their unfolding...just as “play-type plays” invite directors, designers, and actors. I use technology to take us deeper into the theatrical event; to reconfigure how we experience a story together, in the same space, at the same time.
I write plays for audiences with active, searching, inquiring minds...who are energized by making their own meaning, and grow impatient as passive receptors of information...who are digital natives, and for whom I believe theater can do so much more.
I write plays for myself. Because playwriting is the most potent tool I’ve found for teaching myself what to pay attention to; for finding my best friends; for being honest; and, ultimately, for feeling a little less alone in this life.
