Artistic Statement
Playwriting is transformation. Whether the initial idea is inspired by classic literature, pop music or anecdotes (or heartbreaks) from my own life, my plays combine essences of ideas and characters and situations that have existed in previous contexts with raw creative fiction to create fresh, intensely theatrical stories, characters and situations. I am very interested in what the theatre can offer by way of storytelling that does not exist in other mediums; the way that characters can interact with an audience, the way that design and non-literal spectacle can enhance storytelling with imaginative representation of ideas, characters and themes. My protagonists range from a woman MMA fighter to an 18th Century broken-down plow horse to a man who saved the world from an alien insurrection to the playwright Jonathan Josephson.
