Artistic Statement

I am a playwright who sees the bug in autonomous car software and doesn’t ask ‘was the manufacturer at fault, or the woman the car killed?’—I tear down the highway infrastructure and build something better. I explore the nexus of social and technical systems because technology reveals the most noble intention and most frightening bias in every person.

I write the characters I want to see: complicated women with intersectional identities behaving badly, making mistakes, and engaging in acts of revolution. These women understand the paradox that no one gets anywhere just by being nice, but that we gain strength in empathy.

I am recombinant DNA, absorbing feminism, science fiction, new media, absurdism, gothic horror, and dark comedy. I eat them and sequence something new.

I start every play with a societal problem that disturbs or excites me. I translate it for my target audience, nest it in a container of humor, and then break open the container to gut-punch the truth. I am writing plays that shatter myths about reality television, marriage, childbearing, abortion, social media, mental health, activism, domestic abuse, bias, white supremacy, and tribalism.

I believe every play is an act of resistance. I want to make vulnerable people feel powerful and traditionally powerful people quake.

I am resisting.
