Samantha, a novitiate, is reluctantly returning home to Boston for her mother’s second wedding. As a nun in devotional school, she often has to deal with people being uncomfortable around her, but her own dysfunctional family takes the cake. No one in Sam’s family has truly come to terms with her life decisions, including her younger brother Sebastian, who has decided to humiliate and shame Sam in front of the family at every possible opportunity. Likewise, Sam’s mother, Olivia, still holds onto the notion that she might change her mind, and finally do something “normal” with her life. To top it all off, Sam’s ex-boyfriend, Ben is now part of the family through marriage, creating a situation where Sam constantly feels that she has to apologize for her vocation and lifestyle. Modern Devotional explores how truth, meaning, and self-actualization can manifest differently in different people, and how freedom and purpose is as diverse as the spectrum of experience itself.
