I am a sad Cuban-American boy, who writes plays about being Cuban-American. Not just that though. They also tend to be about suicide, love and longing. For some reason I like writing solo performances. But I also love writing long winded two-three person plays. And now I write about being Cuban-American. I know it isn’t that I “write to write”, I think it’s more that I write to appease some sort of word demon inside of me. Who prattles off about how my writing isn’t worth anything; so why not write about these hyper-specific things that only I can relate too? But then I remember that David Greenspan doesn’t care about if folks can relate to small hyper specific things, so why do I care about it? So the Word Demon and I are like friends a bit. But they’re slightly abusive to me in that early 2000’s mean girl way. And still I write. Because the words still come out of me. At the end of it all:
I write to tell stories that drag theatre where it does not want to go.
