Artistic Statement

At the heart of my work, I aim to explore the essence of what makes us human. I am most drawn to characters when they are up against tremendous odds, whether these obstacles are internal or external. I love to tell stories that center women as the protagonists as they endure life’s challenges, defy gendered expectations, battle internal conflict, and experience moments of clarity. I am particularly interested in the way that mental health impacts characters and in examining moments in life that cannot be succinctly defined. I enjoy creating stories that pay respect to classic texts and theatrical forms while subverting expectations, and I aim to depict stories that provide an escape for audience members, while simultaneously inspiring persistence in their daily lives.

I am drawn to the theatre above all other mediums, because I love to explore narratives in highly theatrical landscapes in order to find moments of shared authenticity. I enjoy working on projects that require a level of research and immersion into a different world. There is something magical about finding universal moments in a specific or highly theatrical setting. The whole world falls away for a moment and the audience sees themselves in a world both completely foreign to them yet also familiar.

When I work with other artists as a fellow writer or in a dramaturgical capacity, I like to act as a sounding board for collaborators to help them gauge whether the work lands in the way that is intended. I am passionate about finding dramaturgical adjustments that hold the largest impact. Throughout the process of development, I take great care to alternate seamlessly between examining specific moments in the text and back to the larger picture.
