Artistic Statement

As a Playwright, Sydney has focused her work on developing empathy and voice. As a queer jewish woman and sexual abuse survivor, she knows well how important it to be known and remembered for who you are. Using her background in archaeology, she is given a unique purview on our histories and what they might (or might not) have looked like. In turn, she has spent the past decade devoted to creating theatre that centers those whose stories are stifled and looked past. From the forgotten opera singer to jewish refugees of WWII to the people we forget in our own family histories, Sydney builds stories that center love, healing, and confronting one's self. Her concept of generational love, a companion and sometimes antagonist to generational trauma, has taken her work to new and exciting places that challenge our understandings of who we are and who those before us were. Because, to her, writing has always been an act of empathy, not comprehension.
