Artistic Statement

I write because I have questions. I have things to take up with God. I am looking for healing. Ultimately, I’m a storyteller in various ways –
my guess is that I have griot ancestry in my blood.

Writing has always felt like I was pulling something out of me that was already there but that I couldn’t see or know until I pulled it out. It teaches me about myself and helps me make sense of the world around me. Michelangelo is famously quoted for saying, “The sculpture is already complete within the marble block, before I start my work. It is already there, I just have to chisel away the superfluous material.”
That’s how I feel about writing. It’s already there. I just have to release it, and once I do, I will have learned and/or experienced something new. For the pieces that I choose to share, my prayer is that whomever meets my art, learns and/or experiences something new as well.

In a nutshell, I write to give voice to the silenced and to find healing.
