George Sapio

I've been writing plays and working in theatre for over thirty years. I've produced dozens of shows, co-founded and served as the artistic director of the Ithaca Fringe Festival (2014-2017). Over the years I've acted, directed, designed lights and sets, and served as a dramaturg. I believe in learning everything there is to know about theatre.

I was a MacDowell fellow in 2023.

In response to playwright colleagues asking me about my development experiences, I wrote the how-to book "Workshopping the New Play: A Guide for Playwrights, Directors, and Dramaturgs" (Globe Pequot Books). For the past eleven years I have produced and hosted the monthly podcast “Onstage/Offstage,” featuring interviews with theatre professionals from around the world and live readings of new short plays.
