Artistic Statement

I’m a musical theater lyricist and bookwriter with a long history of working as a downtown NYC, post-Brooklyn College playwright. In late 2018, one of my plays burst into song, and since that initial concert reading, I’ve been hooked on the intersection of music, language and storytelling. I enjoy robust, intensive collaborations with composers and the process of deeply integrating sound and text. I’ve dabbled in opera and screenwriting, and am particularly interested in crossing conventional musical theater vocabulary with elements present in contemporary experimental theater, the classical sector, and even innovative recent television. I’m inspired by musical theater writers such as Stephen Sondheim, Jeanine Tesori and her collaborators, and Wagner; playwrights such as Anne Washburn, Sibyl Kempson, and Young Jean Lee; and modernist writers including Gertrude Stein, Virginia Woolf and James Joyce. As a Millennial feminist, I often write complex female characters, majority female casts and for audiences under 50. My darkly comic projects cross high-concept genre worlds with everyday modern life, drawing particular influence from science fiction, dystopian speculative fiction, magical realism and horror to explore a range of themes including gender politics, the complexities of embracing contemporary adulthood, the expression of power, urban anxieties, education, nerd culture, parent-child relationships and environmental concerns.
