  • Jenny Connell Davis: what fits inside a human heart

I was really charmed by these characters, and the slow unfolding of their relationships. Is it fair to say that this feels like a gentle play? Turner's handling of the relationships is deft, and her affection for these characters apparent. A sweet, specific world, with representation we don't always get to see...in a moment when a lot of plays feel very "in your face," this is a play that quietly gets into your heart.

  • Jenny Connell Davis: certain as a storm

Such a heartfelt, beautiful play about love and family and how to find safety in a world that feels unsafe. A kind of grounded sci-fi, with just enough weirdness to be its own kind of magic. It's super-stageable -- I would love, love love to see this play in the hands of great actors.

Yes, yes, YES to this play!!! Norton's got SUCH a specific, terrific, funny, loving voice and it's on full display here, with characters I can't get enough of. Oh, I'm so mad I'm only reading it and can't WAIT to see the damned (Blessed? Probably Blessed) thing on stage.

  • Jenny Connell Davis: How Should A Conversation Be?

Pennycook notes that the play should be performed like it's a speeding train and that's what the play feels like...if a speeding train were heart-wrenchingly on-point about relationships and love and the passage of time and the fragility of the body and the beauty of finding your person and making a whole messy, fucked-up, imperfectly wonderful life with them.

    It moves, and it's moving.

  • Jenny Connell Davis: Walden (Remix)

A fascinating "what if" that tackles AI, family ties, the challenges of friendship, loneliness, isolation, and community. I read this play with a group who have grandchildren the same age as most of these characters and they LOVED it an identified with the characters! A great play with the potential audience of multiple generations.

  • Jenny Connell Davis: Shoe

A really moving play, about the pull between your own needs and the needs of your family. Both culturally specific and totally universal, this is a deeply felt family play. Lovely work.

  • Jenny Connell Davis: Alien Girls

I see so much of my own/my friends' struggles in Tiff and Carolyn's characters. This friendship feels super-real, alien babies and all.

  • Jenny Connell Davis: The Caldera

God, there was a time when this play read like sci-fi. It CERTAINLY doesn't now. A prescient play, that unwinds slowly, managing to feel truthful, grounded and mythic all at once. It's deft, and an interesting angle in on a topic that a LOT of us are trying to figure out how to make theater about.

There are plays that enter you through your head, plays that enter you through your heart, and plays that enter through your gut. This play, for me is one of the latter -- it's unapologetic, unafraid, deliberately side-stepping a more intellectual logic in search of the kind of truth you find in your bones.
Yes, it has a story, character relationships -- in a lot of ways, it "works" in very traditional ways! But Bender is asking questions about faith, sexuality, our inner monsters in ways that will challenge and delight.

I was lucky enough to catch the workshop production of this play at UT Austin. Uvalde is still pretty fresh, down here, and as a parent of young kids, this play hits very close to home. So it's a testament to the strength of the play that I laughed, connected hard with all of the characters, and was able to take the flights of fancy the play takes. Yes, this is taking on dark subject matter, but in the best way -- a way that digs into the humanity behind problems that could polarize. Highly recommend.
