Artistic Statement

My artistic vision is to create compelling theater by presenting the issues of our time using genres that are often underrepresented on the American stage. I challenge the boundaries of a genre’s conventions, in the hopes that the audience will recognize themselves in characters and situations outside their norm. By transporting an audience to a world unlike their own, such as a supernatural Vienna at the end of the 18th century, a high security prison on a colonized planet or an isolated Gothic manor, I chip away at preconceptions by exposing the commonality of controversial subjects.

In crafting a play, I begin with setting. Building the world helps me set the politics and rules of faraway places and dictates the genre that I play within. As my characters form, I unearth their secrets and uncover the moment to moment interactions. The discovery of how people live and react is how thematic and sociopolitical parallels are revealed. I find these early moments of discovery to be the most thrilling and daunting aspects of creating a play, as they are the most creative and informative.
