  • Donna Gordon: CHARLOTTE'S LETTERS

This story was done with such grace and dignity - qualities Emily Bronte possessed. I love the novel "Jane Eyre" and this back story of her time spent in Belgium. The romance has a sad ending but during its development so much is said about beauty - in gardens, which Emily loved, and French lessons which Emily found challenging. The point of view makes this play exciting. This is not the standard tale about Emily and her family, but a story about Emily alone in a foreign country. A great addition to Emily's legacy.

I love the way Jennifer shows the importance of supporting roles in the literary drama. The friendly and joking Irish maid and the reclusive, bookish Emily Dickinson have a bond that affects history. Emily impressed me the same way that Thornton Wilder did: they show the importance of little things and events. The Irish maid may not be listed in history books but she is undeniably one of the greats - a great friend. I loved this play and its suitability for young audiences.

  • Donna Gordon: The Unfortunates

Ms Stratford has, indeed, captured Victorian London which was one of the cruelest places you could live in. Destitute children roamed the streets (think Charles Dickens) and poor and disenfranchised women supported themselves, usually more than partially, by prostitution. I love the beauty of this era but hate its consistent lack of compassion for the poor. Ms. Stratford captures all of this perfectly in this play, and the fog adds to the horror.

  • Donna Gordon: CANOPY

I like the warm and cozy domestic feel of two people, partners for life, doing everyday things around the house. They seem delightfully intimate and involved with each other. On another level, they long for something else and the message is, to go for achievable goals in your life, such as visiting foreign places or tackling challenging projects. These people seem confined within their conformity, yet their wonderful humor is unusual and entertaining. It's exciting for the audience to anticipate what comes next and the staging colors the lives that most of us live.

  • Donna Gordon: HEY, EMILY DICKINSON, I GOT A CHEESESTICK! A One-Minute Play for Two Kids

Yes, Asher, you have the right dialogue for this age group. Show them that getting out of depression means just a willingness to join life again - with a push from a best friend.

  • Donna Gordon: ICE FRONT

A clever blending of myth, history and reality. The question of immigration is never an easy one. Touching upon it in this way brings compassion to an issue that is usually made into a political fracas. Don't forget that immigrants are each individual people, and then, maybe we can solve the problem.

  • Donna Gordon: SCRIBE, or The Sisters Milton, or Elegy for the Unwritten

This is a brilliant play - and hilarious, too. Though L M quotes many of Milton's unforgettable lines, L M also shows that Milton was not a good father, to say the least. As a perpetuator of the myth that girls are not capable of academic learning, which was the cultural belief of the time, he becomes a tyrant who uses his daughters to take care of his own needs. He was a genius, and the genius of this play is that it shows the foibles of a man, special as he is, through the eyes of his entertaining daughters.

  • Dream Productions: ALBAN--FIRST MARTYR OF BRITAIN

This has a lot of what I'd like to see: biography, history, and faith. Include this as a scene in a longer play, please. Then I would get more of what I love.

  • Donna Gordon: Only Human (monologue)

An interesting take on gun violence and how it affects the innocent. What would Jesus do? That's a good question for the survivors and one we all need to ask if affected by this crisis.

A necessary play - an up close and personal look at sexual abuse and how it affects both child and adult. Because this is so cleverly written, it is engrossing. Our culture seems to downplay this kind of abuse and deny the child is telling the truth. Maybe this is an unfortunate layover from the past. But it is more than unfortunate, it is criminal. Let's teach students at an early age "to tell their secrets". The courage Emma Goldman-Sherman demonstrates provides a fine example for others.
