Artistic Statement

As a Latina who moves freely between White and Latino communities, I see a wide variety of people. And I write about all of them, seeking that intersection between behavior that fascinates me, and what I think the world needs to hear now. I populate my plays with educated people of color and women. Our voices are not being heard in professional theatre today. If you doubt me, look up “The Count”, a study done by The Dramatists Guild and The Lilly Awards (December 2015); merely 3.4% of all plays produced in the USA are by women of color.  In the Mid-Atlantic Region, “The Count” breaks it down for us: 727 productions tallied, 24% ARE by women, 14.1% ARE by writers of color. I have a Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Engineering, so I geek out on statistics.

I am most fulfilled when I write plays that deal with social issues. I gravitate towards writing comedy because I like to hear audiences laugh. It’s one of the most fulfilling moments for me. Laughter means that those audience hearts just opened and received my words. We are together in that moment. We understand each other in that moment, regardless of any demographic differences.

I’ve written about everything from Latinos in advertising, to illegal immigration, to the search for eternal youth, to obsessive pet owners. Who knows what will come out of my imagination next?
