Artistic Statement

Artistic Statement

The real world and the human experience within it can be raw, ugly, and unforgiving — hell, it usually is.
And plenty of writers explore that side of existence in their work.
But life has a dreamlike quality, too…
the surreality of extreme coincidence;
the confluence of people and events at a particular time and place;
the seemingly-magical, out-of-body, out-of-linear-time moments we experience;
the harshness of and humor in nature itself.
The undercurrent of some unnameable presence — some invisible force gently tugging on the strings of circumstance — creates the impression of reality through a soft-focus lens;
humans as playthings for the universe’s deranged whims.
This is the lens I prefer.

With a focus on collaboration, I avidly seek opportunities to create innovative new work that marries a diverse range of art forms and utilizes a spectrum of artistic sensibilities. Though my plays are not overtly political, I’m a Jewish female who knows that black lives matter, approaching the end of my childbearing years in a country whose president is grabbing pussy — the things that keep me up at night can’t help but find their subtle way into my work.
And while playwriting has been a natural step in my life’s journey as an artist and theatremaker, I’m driven by a responsibility to use my voice; to shatter audiences into thinking differently about humankind and the world they thought they understood; to create opportunities for artists to explore concepts and characters through innovative theatrical forms; and, most simply, to write because this fucked up world is not going to change itself.
