  • Rachael Carnes: Protocols

A brilliantly genre-bending response to the ubiquitous new Zoom Play theatre prompt. Funny, smart, a little bit wicked, and skewers the quietly desperate banalities of video conferencing we've probably all experienced in our work lives by now. Gatton hits all the notes, and this play's a treat. Perfect for acting or directing classes hard-pressed to figure out how the heck to teach while distancing. Two thumbs up!

  • Rachael Carnes: Commencement (a 10 minute play)

Aw, so sweet, capturing a moment in time, and the perfect choice for a Zoom play festival. This is balm for those experiencing derailed 2020 Graduations, or the parents who love them. It's nice to remember that graduation's not an ending, but a brand-new beginning. Lovely work!

  • Rachael Carnes: The Test: A Monologue

Wow! Riveting. This monologue pulls me right in, it's so alive, the character present and focused. It's rare to hop into a moment and see it so clearly, and Seinuk does that so well here, providing perfect ledges for an actor to grip onto as he climbs to emotional heights. So well done!

  • Rachael Carnes: Jack Pork

Smart, funny, totally magnetizing writing. This play has everything, said and in subtext. Simply perfect. Put this in your short play festival yesterday.

  • Rachael Carnes: Top Shelf Tolstoy

A sly premise is the perfect backdrop for Gill's cracking dialogue in this satirical piece. There's so much to admire about the world-building here, character and story and a whole microcosm developed in a few short pages. Fans of this should check out Gill's longer work, American Divide, which is equally prescient and compelling.

  • Rachael Carnes: Goodnight Embryos

A compelling exploration of a timely and weighty topic, this play's crisp dialogue drew me into its tightening world. It feels very present, with internal and external power dynamics stretching at what these women think they know about themselves.

  • Rachael Carnes: BLAME IT ON BARBIE, a four-minute comedy for two women

Awwww perfection! Any theater kid will see themselves in this adorable piece. Rose gets right at the uncertainties of a life built on passion, but if we don't follow our dreams, what's the point? Such a resonant, relatable and timeless moment. Two big Barbie thumbs up! (Barbies don't really have "thumbs"...)

  • Rachael Carnes: WIND IN THE WILLOWS

This play's a delight from start to finish! Elendune takes a beloved tale - Mole, Rat and Toad are the greatest characters in history, fight me - and brings them to a ridiculous, contemporary farcical new heights. The cadence rollicks along at a fantastic speed, yet devotees of the source material will find plenty of literary Easter eggs, planted assiduously and with care. Darn you, Covid-19, for slowing down this performance! There's nothing better than messing about in boats.

  • Rachael Carnes: Benched

What a delight! Cuthbert's dialogue crackles and what's said is as delicious as what simmers underneath. This would be a dream for any creative team to explore.

  • Rachael Carnes: 0% Chance of Visibility (a 10 minute musical comedy) by Marj O'Neill-Butler and Arianna Rose

YES! Stop everything and enjoy this gem. Snappy dialogue, hilarious and revealing lyrics - this is a marvelous vehicle for mature women actors. I wish I was 60 years old and could sing, or act, so I could be in this musical!!
