  • Rachael Carnes: Kafka and the Doll

Absolutely beautiful, and especially poignant to read right now. Haas's dance between real/imagination flows easily, with a delicate touch to establish the new locales, in this unique and timeless adventure. As in all of her work, Haas creates a powerful three-dimensionality for her youth character, Sofie. There's wonderful modeling here, about how the generations can cooperate to get through experiences together. Doesn't get much more topical, or timeless, than that.

  • Rachael Carnes: Plano

This was the last piece of live theatre - at the Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago - that I saw before entering quarantine, two weeks ago, and what a gift. I'm still chewing on Arbery's evocative familial dysfunctions, crossing the bounds of space and time. A play as real-unreal as anything we're living today. I'm so sorry that this brilliant production, like so many, cancelled early. So grateful I got to see it! Give it a read, and see what I mean: It's weird as sh*t, but that makes more sense all the time. I'm a big fan.

  • Rachael Carnes: Viral Love

Charming and sweet, with a dollop of loss — What are we, without each other? And where is love kindled? In the moments immemorial, I guess, the way we've never wanted to part. A lovely, poignant work. Thanks to the playwright for this reflection.

  • Rachael Carnes: Sapience

I listened to/watched/participated in a reading of this play, via videoconference, on 3.19.2020, and was continually bowled-over by Burbano's prescient ideas, delivered with delicate ferocity. This play's humor and heart shine, in dialogue that grips us into a forward momentum. I had to bow out early of the live reading, because my own pent-up teenager was melting down, making this play all the more relevant and real. Catching up with the script this morning, I feel less alone.

Thank you, Diana, for showing us where we can go in the darkness, that within us, is light.

  • Rachael Carnes: Starry Night

Cowley's work never disappoints, in this dance it does, between the lovely, lyrical poetic world, and this earthbound relationship that are so quickly established, and developed, in these brisk pages. I so admire this work, and -- maybe it's my mood -- I can see this play online, in a digital platform, taking us to a new place. Thank you, Sheila, for the few minutes of respite. Your play is beautiful.

  • Rachael Carnes: Three Ladybugs

A charming play, with a beautifully lush subtext, inviting questions about meaning and perspective, grief, decisions, the biggies, within the context of three adorable ladybugs. I love this, and would love to see it performed. Even just reading it is balm for the soul. Thank you for this play.

  • Rachael Carnes: Little Things Add

I love it when I happen upon a play that sucks me into a historical moment I know *nothing* about! This one ignites my imagination and interest as I'm reading - Harvey and Edith are witty and energetic, and the piece zooms into their world so effectively. A rat-tat-tat rhythm keeps forwarding us, in a bright nugget of a one act play. Go, Science!

  • Rachael Carnes: Secret Family Recipes

Delightful! McClain's dialogue sparkles in this family romp with a beyond-the-grave vibe. Lots of fun action and comic surprises would make this an engaging piece for any team to work on, and audiences will eat it up.

  • Rachael Carnes: Threatened Panda Fights Back

Yes! This play says so much in its subtext, and feature pandas! Because -- of course! McGregor's crisp dialogue underscores relevant contemporary concerns in this clever play. A field day for a creative team. Looking forward to seeing it on its feet - When the Towne Street Theatre in Los Angeles reschedules their 10-minute play festival. #CovidCancellations

  • Rachael Carnes: The Age of Understanding or, The Character of Dad

I had the pleasure of hearing a reading of this at the Mid-American Theatre Conference, and I'm bowled over by its honesty, its humor, the way Gonzales grapples with the changing landscape as a new father looks back towards his own father's dysfunctions, and towards his new baby's future. It's universally relatable, yet with Gonzales' penchant for emotional reveal at-once subtle, human and heartbreaking.
