  • Ruben Carbajal: CREAK

As an adult, I'm not afraid to admit it's scary out there. And though CREAK is a fun and twisty blend of comedy and horror, when the laughs are over, it forces you to reflect on just how incomprehensible and terrifying the world must be for the young. One of the standouts of the Gi60 festival and a perfect one-minute play.

  • Ruben Carbajal: Ignore the Random Bear

Neil Radtke's IGNORE THE RANDOM bear is everything I want out of a ten-minute play. Gripping. Strange. Propulsive. Transcendent. There's a taut, tightrope of uncertainty that keeps the play aloft and confidently leads you through the mystery to what finally feels inevitable (Both endings are valid, but I think I prefer the second). Lovely stuff!

  • Ruben Carbajal: GINNY FEELS GREAT IN HER PROM DRESS AND SHE IS GONNA DANCE! [A 1-MINUTE PLAY]

In a moment where so many people are locked into rage silos, this light-hearted and disarmingly poignant play by Steven G. Martin shows us that losing yourself is the antidote for much of life's ills. Makes you want to dance!

  • Ruben Carbajal: ALICE

Creepy, perfectly-paced horror. A dark attic. A friendship with a secret. And a doll with a horrifying agenda. It's a disturbing combination that comes together with the delicate and deadly precision of a mousetrap. You'd be hard-pressed to find a more effectively scary short for a Halloween play festival.

  • Ruben Carbajal: Six Dirty Words

The comfort of a bookshop in a country besieged by censorship provides a disarming frame for this profound piece as it moves from whimsy to darkness, while ending on a note of hope. Taking just a few pages, SIX DIRTY WORDS is a memorable satire that reminds us of where resistance lives and breathes.

  • Ruben Carbajal: The Dhalkorium

What stood out for me, aside from the perfect blend of comedy/fantasy/horror, was the furious pacing and rapid-fire dialogue. The script moves with precision, increasing the stakes and laughs at a feverishly entertaining clip. A lot of fun all around!

  • Ruben Carbajal: Smitten (one minute version)

A fun, funny, philosophical minute of divinely-inspired comedy. Packed with a lot of laughs while probing deeper questions about our relationship with god. A stand-out for any short short festival!

  • Ruben Carbajal: Help Me/Shoot Me

Twain said history doesn't repeat itself, but Danielle Wirsanky's Help Me/Shoot Me is a chilling reminder that sometimes it more than rhymes. This short piece confronts audiences with a stark warning against passivity. It's the perfect play for a country sprinting towards fascism.

  • Ruben Carbajal: APEX PREDATOR

The verisimilitude and naturalness of the language lend to a taught, and razor-sharp atmosphere of slowly-building menace. APEX PREDATOR grabs your attention and doesn't let go.

  • An unflinching, heart-pounding, and incendiary short that burns with desperation and sadness. It grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go. A remarkably moving piece of theatre that will stay with you long after you've experienced it.
