Artistic Statement

There is nothing as immediate an art form as theatre and what an oxymoron it is too. As theatre imitates life, I imitate the complexities of the current world and try to distill it into a tapestry that I can figure out. With every new play I create, I look at the structure of the narrative and make it as challenging a piece for actors, directors and designers to unpack. A good puzzle box should not be easy to solve.

And in that challenge, I tease out the emotions of resounding life-changing moments such as redemption, violence, innocence and truth, because those things are so hard to grasp but ultimately a transcendental human experience that I believe is quite universal.

This is all in the hopes, that I eventually leave behind an experience that answers my life-long search for new myth and heroes. We need our heroes, especially now, so we can live with dignity and urgency. We need our cautionary tales, as the world is changing too fast and I believe that we as writers have an important calling to look further into the future, to be more detailed in scrutinising the human experience. To show that even though the world is changing and we believe ourselves safe in our bubble, we too are changing, even when we don’t realise it.

My audience is the audience of the numb.
And I write to wake up.
