Artistic Statement

In my writing, I focus on the ugly, messy complexity of being a human being. Even the most beautiful, perfect people shit and piss and sweat and bleed. People with the greatest intentions can do terrible things. “Villains” sometimes save the day. My hope, through my writing, is to shed a light on unexpected protagonists, those who are usually only given focus as victims or plot devices. Bunnies is an extreme example, as the main characters were animal, but all of my work focuses on giving voice to those often not heard or written as supporting characters to someone else’s narrative.
Can a young, queer woman of color be just as emotionally flawed as David Mamet’s middle-aged white men without being labeled “annoying”? Alternatively, can I get the “wokest” audience to connect with a character they are morally opposed to? If the goal of theatre is to grow empathy, which I think it largely is, shouldn’t both of these things occur?
