Artistic Statement

It’s rare these days to meet a writer who only works in one medium, and I count myself as such. I've written for video games, industrial video, interactive websites, and film. But while I love writing in all kinds of digital media, theater is easily my first love. Throughout my career, I keep writing stage plays because I’m drawn to theater’s living connection between performer and audience. No matter how well digital graphics and production values emulate real life, games and film have never been able to replace the power of live actors to engage the imagination of a live audience. EverScape represents my best attempt to take the excitement and thrills of a virtual gaming world into the living, breathing reality of the theater.

At the same time, this play and others of mine are driven by human relationships between unlikely friends and lovers. Framing the Shot is another favorite example—how can an assassination attempt bind together a pair of completely opposite people in solving the mystery of what makes a single person significant and special? The fact that this play has worked great with both a female and male cast is a testament to how human connection powers the best stories on stage.

As we all make our best art to tell new stories on stage, I hope you enjoy reading my work and that we can collaborate together in the future.
