  • Lee R. Lawing: WINDBERRY CREEK

There is no one who writes like Carnes with such humor and heart, and this is one of those plays everyone should read and remember because it is true gift to the stage. I am sorry I am missing the reading that’s happening this weekend, but family histories and family pains are so well documented in this heartbreaking play which strips away the veneer off mental illness and how much it permeates our current culture. See this play. Remember this play. Remember Carnes. She is on a bright path lighting the way for us all.

  • Lee R. Lawing: Clare

Clare is a delight to read and would be so good to see staged. Going into the play I did not know who Clare Hollingsworth was, but Diamond provides us with not only a quick moving play but one that is quick witted as well. I love the three generations of women that this play is about and as with any good bit of history, it makes me want to dive deeper into the subject matter now that I’ve finished. Well done.

  • Lee R. Lawing: THAT KIND OF BOY [A 1-MINUTE PLAY]

What a beautifully written testament to not only love but one's own internalized conceptions of what this play is going to be and what it turns out to be. Truly a surprise and excellently executed. Bravo!

  • Lee R. Lawing: AN APPRECIATION

I think it's human nature to want to feel appreciated. Also, it should be the human thing we all do in showing that appreciation when and where it's needed. Martin gives us a valentine full of admiration in this short play for the sometimes overlooked component of theater, but probably the one most in need of those feelings of love. This would be such a great play to see included in any ten minute festival.

  • Lee R. Lawing: A Ladykiller Walks Into A Bar (10 min)

Chilling to the bone! Rose infuses a simple pick-up scene with the weight of the world attached and it's eye-opening to think which one would you be? Looking forward to reading others by this playwright.

  • Lee R. Lawing: The Apple

Frightening on so many levels about a boy's awakening sexual nature and urges which gives the reader and audiences goose flesh from the start. Weaver spins a magical spell over us with this gem of a short play and adds another winner to his literary arsenal.

  • Lee R. Lawing: Fable

I'm so grateful that DeVita had the phone conversation with June Havoc and that he has given us a gift with his beautiful play Fable. Myth and truth and the grey area between the two are excellently represented in this touching biography of one sister's request to be remembered more truthfully. And yet, as Rose states so well, truth doesn't always sell tickets. But it does sell this gem of a play and what a treat that would be to see Gypsy: A Musical Fable and Fable on the same marquee for an extended run.

  • Lee R. Lawing: THE PANIC DEFENSE

Powerful play by Affoumado that tears at the heart and mind. I love the set-up that harks back to the older police shows where episodes were introduced so matter-of-factly, but the heart of this play is its four victims of hate crimes who were killed by people who weren't made to pay for their unforgivable crimes but gotten off with the panic defense. Even though we know times have changed and have gotten better in a lot ways, we sadly know we will always have to keep vigilent against those phobias that are lurking in the shadows.

  • Lee R. Lawing: Animal Kingdom (a one-minute play)

Humans don't always know how to grieve or show their grief because so much of our society tells us not to. Weaver packs a punch with this touching one minute play about learning life lessons and the animals sometimes just have a deeper and richer sense that is often not appreciated by humankind.
