Artistic Statement

Artistic Statement

To describe my work as a writer, composer, and musician, I’ll use a list of things I like to use: Whimsicality, magical realism (sometimes), relationships, human thought and behavior (particularly of the “odd” variety), strong “what if” situations, chaos theory, artists, scientists, academics, “mean people”, underdogs, events spiraling out of control, big issues presented in small ways (because the real chances we get to counter injustice are in our everyday lives), extended metaphors, equality, spiritual struggles, illness, brain versus soul, magic, the afterlife, the supernatural, religion, history, science, families, life in the United States, and out-of-the-ordinary people doing extraordinary things. These are in no particular order, and they aren’t in every play, though they recur. As when I work as a scenic artist or carpenter, I build the play I need to build. I am not partial to any particular genre. I’m willing to do them all!
