My theatre practice addresses the dark side of contemporary civilisation, our complacency and the eroding of the social contract by the idolization of the individual. This has included celebrity culture, the impulsivity brought on by the Internet, and the way that international media glorifies violence. I love theatre that subverts the widely-accepted norm: the theory of ‘history from below’ speaks to the idea that history is dictated by the ‘winners’ (white, heterosexual, and male) and twists that, telling stories from the perspective of the persecuted parties and consequently offering new vantage points to well-trodden narratives; giving agency to the unspoken.
