Artistic Statement

Playwriting has always been the clearest and best way for me to make sense of the world and myself. I write about politics, gender, emotional intimacy, and families of all kinds to add to the conversation of who we are and how we can make life better for each other. I am inspired and driven by the opportunities for education, empathy, and community building within the theatre. I believe art and humor are some of our most effective tools to reach each other and create real, honest connection, and I hope my work reflects that.

I like funny, thoughtful, deeply human characters making bad jokes, swearing too much, and looking for meaning in all the nonsense. I like messy, complicated families, both biological and chosen, who find the humor in the mundane and make their own kind of magic. I like sci-fi and fantasy, and figuring out what they tell us about our sense of reality. I like mining material from memories because "everything is copy." I like learning as I go and maybe winding up a different person from the one who started writing.
