Artistic Statement

I am a queer Egyptian playwright, translator, and producer based in New York. Through my playwriting (The House of Grandma Hanem, Drowning in Cairo, and Ramadan on 42nd Street), I interrogate issues of race, colonialism and the experience of queerness in the Global South. I am an Associate International Artist with National Queer Theatre and am currently workshopping my upcoming play, Ramadan on 43rd Street. I hold a BA in Theater with emphasis on Playwriting, Dramaturgy and World Theater from NYU Abu Dhabi, and this fall, will be pursuing my PhD In Theatre and Dramatic Criticism from The Graduate Centre in the City University of New York alongside an artistic apprenticeship at The Lark Center for Play Development.
