Artistic Statement

At the Company One PlayLab, we were all asked a seemingly simple question. "What kind of plays do you write?" It took us all a while to put it in words, but for me I find myself writing about people who are playing roles in one way for the other: The person you are vs. the person you are presenting yourself as. My full length plays REPOSSESSED and CHAPLIN & KEATON ON THE SET OF LIMELIGHT both explore that.

I find myself often filtering one type of media through the lens of another. I've written a play about film icons Chaplin & Keaton, a novel about comic book superheroes exploding in the real world, a webseries about podcasters, a play about people watching a baseball game on TV, and so on. I find that writing with this cross-pollination of media can tell us something about both forms of media, and I love to play with forms. I choose which medium to tell which story with consideration. With that in mind my most recent project was to start a podcast which will present new play excerpts by Boston playwrights.

Very occasionally I write about being a person of Asian descent living in America, though that might be considered as a subset of a person playing a role that I mentioned above.

I've toyed with the idea of challenging theatre companies to have me write them a 10 minute play the day before their otherwise planned night of 10 minute plays, a la a 24-hour play challenge. I've had very good results with this in the past, and would love to try doing this on a larger scale.
