Artistic Statement

I am obsessed with reconfiguring the dramatic form to spark the philosophical with the psychological in fictional play in order to achieve delightful results in the creation of modern cognitive parables. I want to see a just and equitable, compassionate and empathetic future for humanity and my characters always find ways to show us something about ourselves that make us feel we are on the right path. I write and develop ambitious theatre productions. My work embraces the nonsensical, the fantastical, the unknown, the impossible and the surreal because without imagination we have no hope of reshaping the status quo and growing. The combination of scientific-imagination (Sci-Femme, I call it, because it's science based on feminist social values of equality and justice) and the philosophies on human existence allows me to create alternate worlds which, treated with verisimilitude, can be used analogically to challenge the standards of society. Most of my plays start in the visual realm. I paint and draw my worlds first. I write their music. I see them in the abstract... Then, I allow myself to daydream. The seed of the play starts to break ground once I have access to the vision. The vision then becomes the blueprint to the architecture of my writing. I paint, draw, and compose music some more in order to capture the feel, and the energy of the world before I sit down to type. My drafts are abundant with images, metaphors and excessive information and story lines. I hold nothing as precious; I have no debilitating pride about my work. My most productive writing happens in the rehearsal room. Though on the page the work rings as raw, messy, and intense, once embodied, it never fails to lift the spirits of those involved, and to become the collective creation it was always meant to be.
