  • William J. Goodwin: Last Exit

A look at the last moments of a couple who has broken up and is moving on. Or are they? Mr. Williams is able to create a keen tension underneath realistic dialogue so tight you could bounce a quarter off of it. A quiet reflective look at inner turmoil and bad choices. A very "human" play.

  • William J. Goodwin: Last Ship to Proxima Centauri

Simply one of the best things I've read this year. This play makes full use of the power of science fiction to cleverly turn the immigration debate upside down, thus revealing some uncomfortable truths about the US and how we are perceived in the world. The writing is excellent, fast-paced, with strong characters whose dilemma kept me turning pages. I meant to read this slowly over time but ended up devouring it in a single setting. The ending left me breathless. Filled with unexpected twists and turns, this play is true tour de force!

  • William J. Goodwin: An Unquiet Past (Original title: Scar Tissues)

This play really hit home for me. The dynamic that Triplett creates between a loving husband and a hurting wife is spot on, as he accurately portrays how past trauma can lead to pushing away the ones who love us in the here and now. I both empathized and felt incredible sympathy for both characters because this play demonstrates how sexual abuse keeps doing damage long after the abuse has ended, and how that damage is done to both the initial victim and to anyone in their path. A truly devastating and important work.

  • William J. Goodwin: Saga

This was by far the funniest thing I saw at the 2019 MDC conference. Just one great line after another. The writing shows a tremendous range, as Cohen accurately portrays and ancient warrior-goddess and a millennial teen. The contrast between the two is simply priceless. Perfect for any audience, Saga is a guaranteed good time!

  • William J. Goodwin: A Semicolon is a Double

A fresh and unique take on gay teens finding the courage to make a connection. A very sweet and endearing play with plenty of tenderness and understanding. Interesting and well written with provocative wordplay. A true home run!

  • William J. Goodwin: Her Too

As an author who lives in a deeply red part of a deeply red state, I really appreciated Debra's honest depiction of the extreme conservatism we face on a daily basis. Not only is her play an excellent portrait of real people, but it is also incredibly funny. This is a master storyteller practicing her craft. An excellent play for any organization looking to explore the issue of political divisiveness in America today.

  • William J. Goodwin: Ashes of the Revolution

This play has it all. Comedy. Drama. Politics. Family. Heartache. Inspiration. All wrapped up in metaphors and layers of meaning. This play should be taught in MFA programs both as an example of excellent writing and as a primer for how to deliver powerful messages in the guise of entertaining human drama. If nothing else, this play is an authentic homage from a loving father to his exceptional children. Just an excellent play that will both haunt and inspire long after it is seen.

  • William J. Goodwin: Whisper into the Ground

This was the only play among the 23 I saw at the 2019 MDC conference in which one of the adjudicators said, "I got nothing. I'm just a fanboy here." It was simply that good, that well-conceived, staged, paced, and written. I saw few other plays that packed so much into the 10-minute format. Also, as a high school educator, I feel that this play should be mandatory viewing for high school seniors or college freshmen. It is an important work that honestly confronts the worst side of human nature brought out by social media.

  • William J. Goodwin: Overqualified

This is a great example of the best of what theater can be. It tells a compelling story with creative staging that could be performed anywhere by as few as three actors or as many as a dozen. The lead role would be an amazing vehicle for any actress wishing to demonstrate range and versatility. A true dream role. But more than anything, this play is both wildly funny and realistically poignant. Again, the best of what theater can be!

  • William J. Goodwin: Welcome To The Gun Show

This is a chilling, evocative, and an IMPORTANT play. It is a must read for anyone who cares about gun control or who wants to be more informed in the debate over the second amendment. A political masterpiece!
