Artistic Statement

In today’s world people love to reveal every detail of their helter-skelter lives publicly. There are no secrets when folks close deals, fight with lovers, fire staff and just blah blah blah on cell phones where ever they happen to be. As catalysts for my imagination, overheard conversations are all fair game. The voices of those who have come before me, shared time with me or are now with me rattle around in my head until I re-work them into new personae. I like to riff on the tales I hear, have lived or researched.

Using todays overheard conversations to move forward the themes and tales of yesterday is an interesting challenge. Much of my produced work is based on historic events or characters. I enjoy researching the lives and languages of other times and morphing those lives into a theatrical piece that will resonate with contemporary audiences.

My plays often deal with emotions and themes that may be hard to talk about. To me, the easiest way to cope with angst and heavy topics is through laughter. Laughter bubbles up to free the spirit and the mind so that one can deal with crisis or just daily life in a sound and appropriate manner.

Looking at and being able to laugh at our foibles and the foibles of our universe is a way to bring clarity to who we are and what we do. I hope that the laughter that I generate while discussing rather heavy themes will help audiences look inward and outward and open a dialogue with themselves on the world around them.
