Artistic Statement

I was sitting in a producer's office one day getting his thoughts on a script of mine. With some befuddlement he said, "It's like a comedy with dramatic relief!" Though he meant it as a knock I took it, instead, as a great compliment. It captured my love of mixing comedy and drama in unusual ways. To me they co-exist naturally and I enjoy sharing that unexpected mash-up with audiences. Another person offering criticism of my work called me a 'humanist.' I'll take that too. I love crafting stories heavy on character, detailing rich personal journeys. Beyond these well received insults I am proud of the prizes my work has won and the great productions they've had. Each one has encouraged me to dig deeper and go further to explore the human comedy and drama of our lives. Thus far my work has explored everything from the true story of Billy Wilder and Raymond Chandler inventing 'film noir' in BILLY & RAY to a satire about politics and fame in SUMMER ON FIRE to the very personal story of my conquering stuttering as a teenager in BAD HEARTS. My hope is to continue to surprise myself and audiences as I explore new corridors of the human experience. And, hopefully, have a few laughs along the way.
