Artistic Statement

Artistic Statement

I aim to continuously redefine the implications of Black Theatre in America, and challenge assumptions related to my identity as a Black, woman, playwright. An integral component of my artistic mission is to dramatically illustrate the rich tapestry of my cultural background. I am deeply inspired by the contradictions, sensuality, and soulful aspects of Haitian culture, and the intersections of its history with America. I want audiences to experience Haiti in a way that challenges negative media images. As a first generation American citizen, born in Africa to parents born and raised in Haiti, I have always hopped back and forth between the many cultural worlds that have shaped me, and I find the exploration of that in my plays to be increcibly exciting. My dialogue is almost always a rhythmic blend of varioius languages, my characters often struggle with identity, and the conflict in many of my plays explore, in some way, culture collision and the challenges of acculturation. Yet most important, my goal is always to tell compelling stories with characters that are at once authentic and unique, yet universally relatable. I love a good laugh and I love the thrill of crafting comedic dialogue that is on point. I believe there is always light to be found, even in the darkest aspects of human nature. I am committed to revealing that light via humor. Finally, I do not take for granted my capacity to educate and illuminate. It is always my hope that my work can effect change, no matter how big or small.
