  • John Mabey: Crazy Quilts

Karen Fix Curry has woven such a brilliantly delicate tale that will leave you with both chills and laughter. The characters are cleverly constructed and every line races toward the surprising ending. Definitely a play I'd love to see staged.

  • John Mabey: Dry Spell

Dry Spell is a beautiful and heartbreaking play about loss and ways of coping, including forgiveness of self and others. As the characters wrestle with their own decisions, Gretchen Suarez-Pena uses metaphor in such a striking way to illustrate the storms within the house. Complex and layered, this play is such a delight to see performed!

  • John Mabey: Persephone

Reunions are difficult, and this one had me guessing every minute. Scott Sickles has an amazing way with humor, and you'll love every minute you spend with these 4 women. 'Persephone' is uniquely heartfelt and sharp, a modern-day Greek tragedy that has never been more joyful to watch.

  • John Mabey: The Greater and Lesser Edmunds of the World: a short play about bastards and birthright

I had the pleasure of watching this play come alive in an amazing reading today. The play is smart and so well-written, taking masterful and unexpected turns. It also uses Shakespearean themes in such a modern and delightful way.

  • John Mabey: Protectors

Every family has secrets, but in this fast-paced and taut short play there are multiple layers and all for different reasons. Ben Rosenblatt has a unique voice for capturing the voices of teenagers while providing unexpected depth and emotion as well.

  • John Mabey: Coffee House Boos

Jacquelyn Floyd-Priskorn has crafted a hilarious and action-packed short play that will keep you guessing! The characters are distinct and surprising, even when you think you have them figured out. And the message of true, unexpected connection is original and refreshing.

  • John Mabey: Outgrowth

Outgrowth is beautifully written and an amazing character study. It also uses monologues to an amazing extent I've not seen before - they could easily make strong stand-alone pieces but together comprise such an engaging and heartfelt play. The characters are complex and dynamic. Especially powerful is the exploration of the meaning of 'home' and what it means to let go, discovering where you truly belong and the ways we allow ourselves to be seen along the way. There is true poetry in this play.

  • John Mabey: The Elusive Pursuit of Maximum Bliss

This is such a delightful play and Ken Preuss has beautifully created a piece that is both sci-fi and romantic. The technology explored feels very real to our own but always grounded in authentic emotion. This would be an amazing play to watch on stage.

  • John Mabey: BANSHEE BUNGLE - THE PLAY (from the AN iRISH HEART COLLECTION)

Vivian Lermond has written a hilarious play combining Celtic creatures and song in unexpected and delightful ways. The premise had me hooked immediately and she executes as beautifully as a Siren's song.

  • John Mabey: Tina is Weird

We're all weird, but this play is the best kind. DC Cathro has such great comedic timing and here he's written a true winner, reminding us that perhaps there's more than meets the bug-eye. Also this is the first play that resulted in me delightfully testing my own 'walk-style.'
