  • David Patton: failing at a 1-page play festival

I love the genius that Satan invented Zoom readings! For what? A punishment or penance? We wonder. Could the world, and particularly aspiring wordsmiths have misread Old Nick all these years? Oh no, at the very last, he comes true to his biblical form. And all of this in one page...genius!!!

  • David Patton: I.T.S. (In the Syllabus)

It takes but a few lines of dialogue to hear the world-weary despair in the professor's voice as yet another loser attempts to shift the blame for his inevitable failure. If only he'd debated his case...but then, the Prof did tell him he'd missed ... a full hour lecture and discussion on the art of the
persuasive argument. this was sweet, I can almost smell the tobacco as the prof leans back, lights his pipe and smiles...

  • David Patton: FIRE

I hate this Miss Ella character!!! giving out all that "don't you do it girl" advice! Her with her wise words and all...can't she see she's gonna ruin my game here? Now I don't know which side of the advice Missy Vivian was on, but I'm guessing she rode this train both ways... Not a word wasted in this very short piece... Loved it!

  • David Patton: THE MATING HABITS OF SHORELINE BIRDS

Always a pleasant surprise when Vivian posts a new piece... a wee murder mystery perhaps? Some beautiful prose? No, this falls into the "morality play" category. (my definition) We are treated to the rarely observed mating ritual between an American Actuary and a Scottish Ornithologist! As usual with Lermond, the dialogue is sharp and paints a clear picture of her characters. Phyliss finds the courting ritual of Fergus blunt and forthright as he analyses her, but eventually warms to him. After all, as he says ... "Sometimes, life offers an uncharted flight path."

  • David Patton: BLACKCURRANT JAM

I wonder how many springs she's watched blossom to summer, fade once again to winter, each time promising that this one would be her reawakening; her rebirth, her chance to capture a modicum of her lost past which she clearly tries unsuccessfully to block. "every day, as the kitchen clock ticks time away" Lermond leaves us, like Marsha's Earl Grey, to infuse our own emotions into this character. I see not a glass half full, but a teacup almost drained of hope for a brighter future. I can already hear a certain actress I know sigh these beautiful words.

As the sky lights up, so the hopes of the two deadbeats splutter and burn out!

  • David Patton: Micronation

If I'd read this 10 years ago, I'd have enjoyed it as a sharp guy making good and 'coining' it in with his little scam. Reading it now, I can see the future! America, no longer the United States, but the disintegrating federation of dystopian Trumpers! A warning of the shape of things to come...or a blueprint for any small minded, Guvment hating, insurrectionist! Clever, and I hope not prescient!

  • David Patton: GOIN’ BACK TO GOONSVILLE - A Short Spoof on Sappy Seasonal Movies (FROM THE CRACKED UP CHRISTMAS COLLECTION)

Sure, Okay, I know, I get it, this movie's been done before... BUT IT'S A SPOOF!!
I'm not sure anyone does characters and their dialogue better than Lermond...marry that to her twisty, turny plots and it just comes up a winner...every time.
Yep, I hate Amy, whether I was supposed to or not is irrelevant, Lermond made me do it!
And as usual with her shorts, an unexpected wee twist to finish off!

  • David Patton: Claire's Invisibility Monologue

Who can say? Who can say what she'd have become if she hadn't been treated as just a useless girl child.
Kids should be seen and not heard runs the old proverb. Seems like being unseen, unheard and ignored as a child drove her to prove that she wouldn't be an invisible adult!
