Artistic Statement

I'm a queer, feminist playwright who pens plays that are large communal gestures – where the motor comes from the connection, generosity and trust of a large ensemble. Plays that are questing, wrestling. Plays without answers. Plays about women & queers, about outsiders & searchers. Plays examining gender & agency, opportunity & access, bodies & privilege, history & what (or who) it leaves (or erases) in its wake. Plays about legacy – both intentional & accidental, both personal & sociopolitical. Plays that explore what we inherit from who & what precede us. Plays that grapple with & subvert the canon. Plays that are wildly theatrical but deeply intimate. Formally ambitious plays. Plays that strive to be a greater, communal event in which something rare & TRANSCENDENT is transpiring – for those both onstage & off; plays that also feel like an EXPERIENCE. I write plays that move & take up space; plays with backs & legs & arms & touch. Plays that seek justice. Plays that foster connection. Plays that are kinetic & muscular, language-deft & rhythmic, vulnerable & brave, and a little bit impossible. And plays that, I am told, are fundamentally loving.
