Artistic Statement

My work creates space for women.

My work creates space for Black actors.

My work creates space for Black women actors.

As a Black playwright, I am as interested in our collective triumphs as I am our collective trauma.

I believe the stories of my people are universal. They are human stories.

I am inspired by my ancestors—my elders too. I hear their voices. They speak to me and through me.

I am endlessly inspired by the Black experience in America.

It is my aim to continue to shine a light on us. We are not a monolithic people. We are infinite.

We are social workers. Bus drivers. Businesswomen. Lawyers. Utility workers. Fishermen. Stay-at-home fathers. Women who love women. Men who love men. Artists. Art collectors. We’re priests. We’re good mothers. We’re villains. And sometimes we’re angels.
