Artistic Statement

I write plays in the edges of music, poetry and opera. My performances spring from displacement and unbridled presence; cascades of hysteria, black-boxed recordings of disaster, caged desire, and slit voices of vengeance. My characters speak/sing, live and love beyond their means. My work challenges the conceits of realism and the anti-theatrical decadence of bourgeouis multimedia currently in vogue.

When I started touring with my Café Antarsia Ensemble, my vision became more world-driven, folk-operatic, war-torn and drawn to obscured and transient characters who have to transcend self-interest to survive.

Lately I feel my muse is shifting to painting dialogues that grow more “cubist”. I like to inscribe events with vocal art drawn from palettes of emotion rather than reality-programmed stories. I think that to resist the language of corporate realism is to challenge cultures of fear, complacency and intolerance. I want to keep daring to balance control, will, artistic freedom and yearning with my plays.
