Artistic Statement

Complexity drives and shapes my work. Growing up in a biracial nuclear family, surrounded by a multi-ethnic greater family, coming of age in Washington-Heights and the Bronx in the 1960s and 1970s, the child of an inner-city politician, I could not help but develop a world view that grooves on the interconnectedness of our contemporary existence. My plays about politics, race, history, family, that are peopled with a broad range of characters from across the American multicultural landscape, take the audience to that dangerous place where the issues that we would prefer to avoid are not necessarily resolved but at least confronted. I believe that this is, has been and always will be theatre's raison d'etre: to talk about what nobody wants to talk about.
