Artistic Statement

Austin Dowling is a Texas-raised poet, playwright, and writer that believes even the most elaborate of worlds are made of simple well-placed words. They believe there is an untapped magic found in road trips, hospital rooms, birthplaces, bathrooms, books, and the spaces between stars. They strive to reinvigorate audiences with this simple magic while grounding even the most fantastic of elements in our brutal reality; finding truths in their many combinations (queer love/bathrooms, healthcare/fairytales, Snapchat-news/horror, etc).

They love seeing bits of ourselves in parts of people that we believe to be nothing like us, and shows that demonstrate the universal through the personal. It is with that in mind, that through a diverse body of work, they endeavor to build full theatrical worlds where audiences can (re)experience that magic, truth, empathy, and community in one show.

Their work has been seen/heard in Austin, Dallas, Chicago, Spokane, Cincinnati, & New York. They've served as the co-Producer for the Newness Chicago from 2018 to 2019, co-founded multiple collectives (Full Circle Collaborations, Playwriting II, & most recently American Folklore Theater Co).

They’re incredibly proud, and excited to have completed & published their inaugural book, and are currently mid-draft on my second book, have a few plays in development (take care, Good Book of Hate, & i hope this comes back to haunt u), and hope to return to the stage again soon (post Covid).

And one final thing, if you’re reading this: Thank you.
