  • Cesario Tirado-Ortiz: i'm going to eat you alive

Do you ever read something that is so disgustingly, grotesquely weird and yet beautiful? That's how I feel about Riley's newest haunt, i'm going to eat you alive. I'm constantly in awe of the new ways they come up with gross things to do on stage that I adore to see. Keep this show on your radar: You don't want to miss all these bugs.

  • Cesario Tirado-Ortiz: Ivories

"I want love to win, but I don't think it will."

That's what I said during That scene in Ivories by Riley Elton McCarthy. This is what the gold standard of horror theatre is, people! If you want a show that's if Hereditary, The Shining, and Haunting of Hill House had a baby with pronouns, this is the show for you. Read this immediately, read it again, then call me so we can scream about it.

  • Cesario Tirado-Ortiz: The Men I Wish I Was

There are very few pieces of media that encapsulate how it feels to be transgender. I don't think until this moment I found a piece that genuinely mirrors my view of my gender, my sexuality, my worldview as much as this play does. What Bougie does in 29 pages is absolutely incredible. If I could make this required reading in every queer theatre course, I would. Thank you.

  • Cesario Tirado-Ortiz: A Reputation (A Short Monologue About Matthew Weaver, Whom I Have Never Met and Hopefully Takes No Issue With the Existence of the Following Existential Musings)

As a fellow non-Matthew Weaver reader, this was such an interesting and fun read! The experimental quality of the dialogue coupled with the genuine thoughts Prillaman puts out is genuinely incredible. A feast for any actor to sink their teeth into, this monologue is going to be a hit the moment it lands in someone's lucky hands.

  • Cesario Tirado-Ortiz: Hooded or Being Black for Dummies

I actually had the privilege of reading this play in class and had no idea it was actually up on NPX (yay me!)! Reading this play was a transformative experience not only as a student, but as a human being. Seeing the reactions in real time to this immensely raw and daring script was the best time I had in a classroom. This play has a message, and if you are willing to dwell in your discomfort and unpack WHY you feel that way, then please. Read this play.

  • Cesario Tirado-Ortiz: Chainmail

Such a beautiful and unique look on loss and sacrifice using a popular piece of media. Adored the one actor structure, it was super cool and engaging! This is a story that will stick with me for a while. Thank you.

  • Cesario Tirado-Ortiz: El Coquí Espectacular and the Bottle of Doom

Truly a masterclass for the next generation of Latinx theatre. Truly would be an actor's dream to play these roles, and it deserves to be put on again and again! Just an absolute joy.

  • Cesario Tirado-Ortiz: For Leonora, or, Companions

Magical realism, Wizard of Oz, and awkward coffee dates all come together in this gorgeous play penned by St. James. Nora and Stephanie jump out of the page, making me feel so much just from the first few pages. Finally, a story for autistic lesbians to see themselves authentically and beautifully. I cannot overstate how excellent this play is, and when times are more appropriate, I am looking forward to being one of the first to see this on a stage. Brava!

  • Cesario Tirado-Ortiz: Assassinating Zeus

A surreal look into trauma, society and therapy, Prillaman crafts a truly haunting tale that will keep you thinking long after you finish reading it.

Lost my absolute mind reading this. Hilarious, poignant, and just a blast. Thank you!
