Artistic Statement

Artistic Statement

I enjoy the writing process itself. I like the solitude of creating characters and putting them in a time period and a place. If the subject is not an area of expertise, I enjoy researching what I don’t know. Playwriting is the ultimate form of problem solving and I’m always ready for the challenge.

I want to have the freedom to create my own artistic destiny: to take risks and to write what I am passionate about without having to worry about the future commercial life of the play. What inspires me most are the stories of people trying to live their lives, often under extremely negative circumstances: sometimes succeeding and sometimes not. Theatre should enlighten us as well as entertain. When the first draft is finished and ready to be heard, I am ecstatic because what I truly relish is the collaborative nature of playwriting and the challenges one encounters while bringing the page to the stage. I do appreciate the many opportunities I have had to address both my artistic and professional challenges. I always look forward to creating new work and presenting it within a rigorous and nurturing environment.
