Artistic Statement

My Beliefs and Vision

I believe that the shared and collaborative experience of creating, participating in, and attending live theater can motivate us to:

- Challenge assumptions
- Seek and understand truths
- Overcome internal and externally-imposed obstacles
- Be better, kinder and more considerate
- Understand and express our mutual feelings and shared humanity
- Live in harmony with our world, with each other, and with ourselves

My vision is that by creating and presenting personally meaningful new works for the stage and by supporting others in their creation and realization of their works for the stage, my theatrical collaborators, our audiences, and I will help each other better understand and communicate what it is to be humans who support and sustain each other, other species, and our world.

My Mission

I am a theater artist. My mission is to create and shepherd new works for the stage and to support and collaborate with other theater artists in their artistic development and in their creation and realization of their works for the stage.

I will focus on works that I find personally meaningful, that challenge my understanding of our society and its norms, that explore and communicate human truths, and that further human and animal rights and environmental justice.

As a generative theater artist, I will write plays that examine desires, foibles, fears, hopes, passions, dreams, hates and loves, and whatever else it takes to better understand our shared humanity. My plays will often probe the effects of governmental, economic, environmental, social, and personal injustice; our capacity to take meaningful actions against the status quo; and the consequences we face when we take those actions.

Sometimes I will write dramas, sometimes I will write comedies; but, I promise that I will always question, probe, and write truths as best I can.
