Artistic Statement

In my playwriting, as an Arab-American and first-generation Syrian immigrant, I seek to share and showcase our stories and perspectives in American theatre. There are few opportunities for Arab artists in American theatre. I grew up hearing many wonderful fairytales and folklore from my mother and grandmother, and I seek to incorporate elements from those tales into my playwriting. In addition to that, I'm drawn to telling stories that are rooted in ordinary situations that reveal extraordinary, fantastical, outlandish and/or absurd circumstances. While I enjoy projects based in realism, I don't believe that accurate reflections and depictions of the human condition are limited to realistic works.

As a director, I want to create theatre that activates all the senses and provides the audience with hopeful optimism. I believe that theatre can invite us to examine serious issues and faults in ourselves and in society, even through such avenues as absurdist comedies, but in the end should leave us with a sense of hope that the challenges we face are not insurmountable. As is with my interest in playwriting, I'm drawn to stories that are rooted in ordinary situations that reveal extraordinary, fantastical, outlandish and/or absurd circumstances. Additionally, I love directing a play that requires strong character work and development and exceptionally good timing.
