Artistic Statement

My writing is an act of rebellion. It is a quiet but potent resistance, an audacity. As a creator of original works, I am focused on making art that is a reflection of our times. During my early years as a young woman growing up in Bangalore, India, I remember feeling a restlessness that wouldn’t go away, a fire in my belly. I started writing down my thoughts – articulating what I felt in journals, expressing my opinions on blogs, and when that didn’t quite do it, I wrote fiction, I cartooned. The connection from pen to paper was sacred, liberating, and reassuring. In many ways, it saved me. I channeled that further through playwriting. No matter the format, I found that when I shared my writing with others, it started a conversation – we would differ on many accounts – we had varied perspectives, opinions, biases, but it always started a dialogue. It dawned on me that conversation is the point of it. I hope my plays can pose critical questions about contemporary issues, engender dialogue, and be a hopeful call for solidarity and collective action.
