Artistic Statement

I write serious comedies. (And also, who doesn’t enjoy an oxymoron?) I write about people that tend to be overlooked by the mainstream: shy political groupies, queer civil rights pioneers, murderess elderly women, and twenty-year-old working-class gestational surrogates. I write comedies that feature gender non-conformists and their, often, completely confused family members. I really like the outliers. I explore people who have a deep need to answer the question: What is the value of one good yet/and incredibly flawed person? I write pieces that have demanding, interesting, and powerful roles for women of all ages. I want my actors and my audience to have a blast and see the world through the eyes of someone "other".  I’m drawn to characters who not only haven’t been represented on stage/screen but they have been ignored. Those are the stories I feel the need to follow. I have no idea who I would be if I didn’t write. It’s how I make the world make sense. I write toward hope – no matter how small of a sliver – since even a small sliver can change the world.
