  • Pulling Leather: A Queer Rodeo Fantasia

Will Brumley has captured something epic and magnificent - and personal and true down to its core - in this play. The central relationship between Uncle and Nephew, both exploring the landscape of the American West and simultaneously the landscape of the gay experience across different generations is captivating and resonant. The staging possibilities alone should make any director leap for the chance to bring this one to life. Worth your time, and the emotional investment - you may, as I did, find tears in your eyes while reading it.

I was lucky enough to be at the reading at the Valdez Theatre Conference. A charming, delightful piece, set in a world of believable characters with intriguing dynamics - and some fantastic secrets! This play is delicious, and I only hope that one day we get to see a full length version - you will want seconds at the Gateway Cafe!

A brilliant play, beautifully illuminating the power of art in the face of oppression. It is a taught drama with several laugh-out-loud moments to break the tension and keep an audience engaged. The play is a two hander between noted Iranian poet Simin Behbahani and the Revolutionary Guard interrogating her before she can board a flight for a poetry reading abroad. Such a simple set-up, with such high stakes both for the characters and the world entire.

A sprawling, epic play where deep familial intrigue and dark secrets are interwoven into a politically charged world - the conflict between Barker and Esther hits on every level and is delightfully complicated by their hidden connection. There's lots to explore here!

Utterly brilliant. I was privileged to see the reading of this at the Valdez Theatre Conference, and it is a theatrical moment I will never forget. A truly original, highly emotional examination of the trauma of sexual abuse. It is not a comfortable play, it is an important one.
  • Rooted (monologue)

Wow. I'm reeling a little after reading this - imagining the acting/staging possibilities of a fascinating, puzzling, wonderful monologue with an ending that is both perplexing, revelational and maddening - in a good way, and in both senses of the word. This is such an original monologue!
  • The Boys of Terrible Tilly
    25 Feb. 2021
Fascinating, highly original, thrilling and multi-faceted. This play, set in a lighthouse complete with a storm including devastating inundation - would be a designer's dream to stage - or perhaps a student's thesis to imagine the staging - so many possibilities.

An absolutely beautiful play about our differences - and our shared humanity. Deeply recognizable, and quite affecting - much further reaching than one might expect.

Clever, funny, original - and so much fun! This is a lovely little relationship between two bears watching as Goldilocks breaks and enters into the house across the way and eats their porridge. Definitely one to add to an evening of deconstructed fairy tales!
  • Deadheads

An intriguing, original setting with characters that are memorable, and would be a wonderful for two talented actors to really sink their teeth into. The ending is bittersweet and moving, the overall journey encompasses so much - it's in the vein of "Same Time, Next Year" with a fresh, truthful feel.
